Brush on Whitening
Brush-on whitening is perhaps the easiest and most hassle-free tooth whitening method. That being said, they’re also the weakest and may not have much effect on extremely yellow teeth. If you’re just looking for a minor whitening, though, you might want to try either a whitening formula or make your next tube of toothpaste be a “whitening toothpaste.”
Brush on Whitening Formulas
If you’re curious about teeth whitening but aren’t as serious as getting a mouth guard or making a special trip to the dentist, you might want to try a whitening formula. Most drug stores sell them for under $5, which includes enough formula for about 2 weeks of use (the recommended treatment period). After brushing your teeth at night (or in the morning), you just paint a little bit of formula on each tooth. The difficult part is that in order for the formula to work effectively, you must keep your teeth completely dry for the 30-60 seconds it takes for the formula to sink in. Since saliva involuntarily flows into your mouth, this is nearly impossible, and some people end up with white blotches on their teeth. Many formulas also contain alcohol, which makes your breath smell bad. Another negative is that because the formula dries out your teeth, this adds an extra factor for increasing your teeth’s sensitivity.

Another simple and inexpensive tooth whitening product is toothpaste that is labeled “whitening” toothpaste. Whitening toothpastes are perhaps the safest whitening procedure because they do not alter the intrinsic color of your teeth like other treatments. Rather, most whitening toothpastes simply remove surface stains. Major brands of whitening toothpastes carry the ADA Seal of for their polishing agents that provide additional stain removal than normal toothpastes. Whitening toothpastes cost about the same as a normal tube ($3-$4).
